Wednesday Hero 4/25/07

This Weeks Soldier Was Suggested By Sunny Kay

Col. Cyril Richard
Col. Cyril Richard "Rick" Rescorla
68 years old from New York City, New York
16th Air Assault Brigade, Parachute Regiment (England)
Platoon Leader of 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile) (U.S.)
September 11, 2001

Col. Rick Rescorla is a multiple time hero. In 1957 he enlisted in the British Army and began training as a paratrooper with The Parachute Regiment of the 16th Air Assault Brigade. He went on to serve with an intelligence unit in Cyprus, a paramilitary police inspector in the Northern Rhodesia Police (now the Zambia Police Service). When his military career ended in England he joined the Metropolitan Police Service in London. But he found the paperwork too boring and quite at the behest of a friend who encouraged him to join the United State Army. Which he did.

In 1963, Rescorla enlisted, with his friend, in the United States Army. After he completed basic training he attended officer training school and was assigned as a platoon leader in the 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile).

He was shipped to Vietnam and participated in the Battle of la Drang. While in Vietnam, he was given the nickname "Hard Core" by his men for his bravery in battle.

In 1968, Resorla became a U.S. citizen and continued his service in the Army Reserves until 1990 when he retired. In 1985 he joined a financial services firm, located in the World Trade Center, as security director.

In 1993, when the WTC was bombed, Rescorla was instrumental in evacuating people from the building. Afterwards, he enacted a policy in which all employees of the firm practiced evacuation drills every three months.

September 11, 2001. Rick Rescorla was supposed to be on vacation getting ready for his daughters wedding. Instead he was at work covering a shift for one of his deputies so that he could go on vacation. When American Airlines Flight 11 hit Tower 1, Rescorla ignored officials advice to stay put and opted instead to put his evacuation drills to use. While evacuating the 3,800 employees of his firm in Towers 2 and 5 he kept reminding them "be proud to be an American ...everyone will be talking about you tomorrow" and sang God Bless America over his bullhorn. When Flight 175 struck Tower 2, Rescorla had already evacuated most of the employees from his firm as well as many others from other floors. He then went back in, despite being told he needed to evacuate himself. The last known words anyone heard him say were, "As soon as I make sure everyone else is out". Tower 2 collapsed with Rick Rescorla last seen heading to the 10th floor looking for more people to help.

As a result of his actions that day, all but six employees of his firm made it out alive. One of those being him and three others being his deputies who followed him into Tower 2, Wesley Mercer, Jorge Velazquez, and Godwin Forde.

Wednesday Hero

This Weeks Soldier Was Submitted By Anna

Chief Mast Sgt. John Gebhardt
Chief Master Sgt. John Gebhardt
Superintendent of the 22nd Wing Medical Group at McConnell Air Force Base

Have you heard of Chief Master Sgt. John Gebhardt? Maybe you have and maybe you haven't. CMSgt. Hebhardt gain some notoriety recently. Not for an action that he took on the battlefield, but rather for a picture(not shown because it is graphic) that was taken of him.

In 2006, CMSgt. John Gebhardt was photographed holding a little Iraqi girl that had been injured. Her family had been attacked by insurgents. Both of her parents were killed, along with many of her siblings, and she had been shot in the head and left for dead. But she was tougher than that. She was brought to Balad Air Base Hospital where she was operated on and ultimately saved. As you can imagine, it was an extremely hard time for this little girl. Her recovery was hellish. But when CMSgt. Gebhardt would hold her, she seemed to be comforted. He spent many nights sleeping in a chair with her in his arms. The picture wast taken by a fellow airman while CMSgt. Gebhardt and the little girl were napping. Said CMSgt. Gebhardt, "I'm sure that probably just gave her some inner peace that she could reach."

On a side note. This is why I started doing these Wednesday Hero posts. Because of people like Chief Master Sgt. John Gebhardt. It's soldiers like him that should make us all proud of our military.

I am very proud to be married to one of them... So

Heidi Swapp - Week 4

Told you I was trying to get caught up! lol

Here is my Week 4 Assignment:

* I decorated the front of my calendar (see my previous post
on that below).

* I picked two special people for whom I want to make their
birthdays EXTRA special this year. I am not telling who
they are for fear they may be reading this! LOL But for
one I am giving an extra special gift, and the other is
getting a super special surprise party.

I have never thrown a surprise party before so wish me luck!

Heidi Swapp - Week 3

I am finally seeing a light at the end of the tunnel here... I am
in my last two weeks of my college class so hopefully I will get
all caught up with the Heidi Swapp Class.

Here is my assignment for week 3:

Dear Me (LOL),

Last Christmas was great! We had our first Christmas of no
traveling and it was super, stress free, and laid back. This
year, we are definitely going to be traveling though. So...
Let's carry that stress-free attitude over to this year as well.

With advance planning (and advance shopping), I can have
the safe stress free holiday season, AND travel to see our
families.

Things I have to do in advance:

* Shop for gifts! I need to start in June. No. Seriously.

* Get our travel plans hammered out EARLY. Say Sept or
Oct. those tickets need to be bought.

* Start baking early. Bake in Nov. and freeze.

* Get my cards made and out early. I need to start them
in October and mail them out by 1 December.

* No college classes starting November. You can't cram
another thing into your schedule this time of year.

You can do this Elena. You just need to start early... :)

I need to print this and stick it in the October section of
my calendar and another copy needs to go in my planner...

Small Change

Okey dokey... We are starting Week 2 of the class and we need
to do a layout about our goals. So. Looking at that assignment,
I think I need to choose one goal to center on for the class.

With the class inspiring my creativity, I thought it would be
fitting to choose that type of goal. So here is the edited version
of last week's assignment:

Scrapbooking: Make time for my art! Do at least 200 layouts
and projects this year. DUE DATE: Dec 31st 2007

2. List 5 reasons Why:

1. Scrapbooking is me time. I need more me time to be
a more centered person.

2. Assigning time for scrapbooking will make me happier.

3. More layouts means less photos in boxes!

4. I want to give more scrapbooking type gifts this year, so
setting this goal will help me get those done.

5. I need to use up my existing supplies! I am swimming
in scrapbooking supplies that are just waiting to be nice
layouts.

I can sooo get this done! I will be sure and share my photos
and my layout later this weekend... :)

Now don't get me wrong - I am still going to look hot in
that bikini by the 4th of July! :D Now to find a way to
scrap AND do cardio at the same time... :D

Heidi Swapp Week 1 - Life Challenge

I am liking this class already - I can't wait till the goodies ship!!

I decided to keep my journal online so my scrappin buddies
could share in the class experience. Here are the results for
my first week of class.

1. Set your goal. Set a date to accomplish it.

I was so torn between a scrapbooking goal, and a fitness goal,
so I decided to do both.

Scrapbooking: Make time for my art! Do at least 200 layouts
and projects this year. DUE DATE: Dec 31st 2007

Fitness: Look good in a bikini by the 4th of July! I have almost
lost my goal weight (last year's goal). I just need to tone up and
lose that holiday flab that crept up on me. :) Why is that so
easy to put on?? DUE DATE: Jul 4th, 2007

2. List 5 reasons Why:

1. Scrapbooking is me time. I need more me time to be
a more centered person.

2. I have always wanted to look good in a bikini. I have
never ever ever worn one in public.

3. Getting back into a workout and healthy eating habit is
good for my health and well-being.

4. When I eat healthier, my family eats healthier.

5. I need to use up my existing supplies! I am swimming
in scrapbooking supplies that are just waiting to be nice
layouts.

3. Determine something you will tell yourself every day to
keep motivated.

YOU ARE WORTH IT. Make the time.

4. Enlist support. Tell someone who will encourage you
throughout the process.

Done. Dave will hold me accountable. ;)

5. Take photos representing your goal.

Done. I will be sure and share them here soon!

BONUS: Create and write in your journal.

Also done. I am blogging my progress, but am also keeping an
offline journal. You KNEW I couldn't resist altering one. :)
This is my altered journal:

Week 1 done! :)

Happy New Year!

Wow - 2006 is gone. Where the heck did it go?? We had a great
holiday season. We spent lots of time together as a family...
Dave had almost two weeks off - it was glorious. We slept in,
stayed in our PJs and just did nothing. It was great.

But now back to reality... I love the new year. I love the fresh
start that January 1st brings...

Speaking of a fresh start, the Heidi Swapp: A Year to Remember
class at Big Picture Scrapbooking started today! I am so excited
about this class. This week's assignment is nothing short of
inspiring...

This week is a life challenge. I have to think about a goal and set
a date to accomplish it. I love this assignment as the new year is
all about new goals... A bonus assignment is also to start a
journal and write about this goal. What better place to journal
than here? :)

Awesome - I can't wait to start!

Holiday Spirit?

I don't know about you all, but I feeling pretty festive right
about now... :) I love Christmas. I think I love Christmas
even more so now that I have children. I love seeing how
excited they are on Christmas morning... I am all done
with my Christmas shopping, and let me tell ya - that is a
GREAT feeling. Just the last minute stocking stuffers left
really...

We start our Christmas party rounds this weekend. Well,
last weekend really. My friend Lisa had a great couples
only Christmas party. Had so much fun! Poor Dave was
all doped up though (he threw out his back that morning).
We have two more Christmas parties to go - one squadron
and one Wing party. Both adults only. I love my kids, but
there is also something nice about getting all this adults
only time!

I have been creating some Christmas projects that I will be
posting soon. I need to STOP baking though! All that
weight loss will be for nothing! :) No really, I have put on
about 5lbs since my Christmas baking started... Why is it
so easy to put it on, and so hard to take it back off?? That
is soooo not fair... LOL

Oh! And expect a review on that new Basic Grey Magnetic
Mat set soon! I found it at scrapbook.com:

http://store.scrapbook.com/bg-met-642.html

I ordered it and it should be here next week - Merry
Christmas to me! LOL

Daily Scrapbooking Show

I was surfing a while ago and came across this great scrapbooking
webcast called Scrapbook Lifestyle:

http://www.bhgscrapbooksetc.com/video/

It comes on every weekday and is pretty good! It features the
Scrapbook Lifestyle Design Team making albums for others, and
doing challenges from the producers.

There are some great layout ideas to be found here, as well as
photo and organization (you know how I am about organization!)
tips. I really like this webcast and have been watching it every
weekday.

It is free, however there is also a premium option for even more
content. I haven't subscribed to that yet, but I am thinking
about it. Lots of great ideas and inspiration to be found here. Be
sure to try and catch an episode!

Heidi Swapp - All Year!

So I did it... I broke down and did it. I signed up for
Heidi Swapp's "A Year to Remember" yearlong class
at Big Picture Scrapbooking:

http://www.bigpicturescrapbooking.com/classesheidis.html

I can't wait to start and can't wait to get my kit. Her intro
message really hit home. It was kinda pricey (though if
you think about it, it adds up to $25 a month), but I
really am planning to follow this one closely. It was a thing
I did for me, and I am looking forward to learning alot
from Heidi - she is my absolute fave scrapper. I will be
sure and post my progress here - though we don't start
till January - the horror! :)
